Hobby Lobby Hypocrisy and How Mike Huckabee Enables Stealing from Taxpayers

The Caucasian Jesse Jackson is at it again. While most preachers are out in the cold world preaching the gospel, running charities, and winning souls, America’s second favorite celebrity entertainer politician preacher, Reverend Mike Huckabee, cannot be trifled with such menial duties. First of all, winning souls is far less profitable than Fox News-sponsored rabble-rousing. Second, there is not nearly as much personal glory to be garnered by being a boring ol’ soul winner. Third, the poor guy has not the time for altar calls because he is needed to be on television fighting for wealthy CEO’s. Just like Jesus did…?

I am sick of hearing Hobby Lobby CEO David Green whine. Good lord somebody get that baby a bottle! In case you missed it, Mr. Green has been quoted in every Christian magazine in America wailing about the fact that the Affordable Care Act (aka ObamaCare) violates Scripture, thus violates his personal religious beliefs. Mr. Green has even written a letter that has made its way into the public domain that can be reasonably characterized as being heavy on “family” and “Christian” themes.

Mr. Green says that ObamaCare intrudes on his religious freedom because his company would be forced to pay for services that contradict with his beliefs. As a Christian I see his point clearly and I concur with Mr. Green.

Mr. Green says that government should not impose a health care mandate on us. As a Republican with a bit of a libertarian streak I also oppose ObamaCare and emphatically agree with Mr. Green on that point as well.

With my agreements with Mr. Green above one would not be unreasonable to ask, “So, what the heck is the problem, Robert?”

Glad you asked. Here is the problem- Mr. Green’s protest is that as a CHRISTIAN he should be exempt from the ObamaCare law. Mr. Green has said in public that his beliefs are based on Scripture. Fair enough, for even a cursory reading of relevant Scripture makes it abundantly clear that God abhors abortion. However, Mr. Green has said NOTHING regarding what those same Scriptures say about how an employer should treat his employees. You see, Mr. Green wants to invoke Scripture to save his company money, which improves the corporate bottom line, which increases Mr. Green’s personal wealth. Mr. Green does not pay his employees enough to make a living. He prefers to submit his workers to the humiliation of going down to the nearest government office and applying for all manner of public assistance. We are not talking about lazy guys sitting around in their underwear playing X-box all day while getting food stamps. Nor are we talking about slutty welfare queens with 5 kids and 4 baby-daddies. We are talking about people who get out of bed every day and go to their crummy job in order to pull their own weight. CEO’s like Mr. Green dishonor their work ethic, and violate Scripture, by not paying them a fair wage. Worse, as a minister Mike Huckabee endorses this taxpayer-funded payroll plan every time he uses his bully pulpit to fight for those who only fight for themselves. While Mr. Green runs around piously claiming to be an adherent of the teachings of Jesus Christ he manages to violate more of Jesus’ teachings than he is accusing Obama of violating. Mr. Green has never once written a public letter advocating that employers obey the Scriptures that require them to pay a fair wage to their workers. You see, that would cost him money. Mr. Green only promulgates those Scriptures that make him money.

Today is Hobby Lobby Appreciation Day. Mike “I’m hipper than Jesse” Huckabee declared it and evidently that is all it takes these days to get your own national holiday. Undoubtedly today well-meaning Christians will flood Hobby Lobby stores. Undoubtedly Hobby Lobby will make a ton more money this Saturday than they did last Saturday and Mike Huckabee will undoubtedly crow about it on his television show. Rev. Huckabee’s show will get huge ratings and his value as an entertainer will increase. At the same time you can bet that Hobby Lobby employees will make the same 8 or $9/hr they made last Saturday. You can bet that those employees will still have to swallow their pride and stand in a bread line as soon as they get off work. Well, not all of them. Some of them have to clock out at Hobby Lobby so they can get to their other crummy job at Chick-Fil-A. After all, there is no difference between having 1 job that pays $16 an hour for 32 hours versus having 2 jobs that pay $8/hr for 64 hours, right? Oh wait, what about time for family? Such things are not for peasants. You can also bet that the Great White Reverend will not mention these folks on his television show.

If I could talk to David Green I would ask him why the taxpayers are obligated to cover his payroll. I would ask him why he defends Scripture that makes him more money but ignores Scripture that would require him to pay his employees more money. Of course, what do his employees matter? They are poor, and we know what Jesus taught us about the poor, don’t we Mr. Green…?

If I could talk to Mike Huckabee I would ask him to point out in the New Testament where Jesus stepped over servants to serve masters. Of course, what does Jesus know? He never had His own TV show.
